Winter Warmer Presents

A Fascinating Evening of
Short Talks & Film
Huntsman Aquarium Theatre
Saturday October 10th
Doors at 6:00pm Event 6:45pm
The evening is themed Bridges to Ancestral Wisdom: Listening to Nature’s teachers - Coca, Ayahuasca, Huachuma and the preservation of Amazonian ethnobotany. Central to the event will be McKenna’s work in the preservation of South American botanical wisdom, particularly through initiatives like the Biognosis Initiative, which seeks to safeguard over 150,000 specimens in an Amazonian herbarium in Iquitos, Peru. This conservation effort is urgent: out of an estimated 85,000 plant species in the Amazon, only a fraction have been taxonomically verified, leaving vast ethnomedicinal potential hidden within the rain forest. Without targeted conservation, the loss of unrecorded plant knowledge and disappearing Indigenous languages threatens irreplaceable medical discoveries, rainforest ecology, and ancestral healing traditions.
Dennis McKenna is a world renowned ethnobotanist, ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacologist, author, and founding board member of the Heffter Research Institute. A prominent voice in plant medicine, he has appeared in documentaries such as Netflix's Fantastic Fungi and collaborated extensively with ethnobotanist Wade Davis on landmark texts and conservation programs through the McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy.
New Brunswick film maker Greg Hemmings has been working with Dr McKenna for years creating a number of short documentary films about the work of the Academy in its efforts to preserve and document important Amazonian plant species and their link to local culture. He has also immersed himself in the wonders of medicinal plants and their use.

Blackberry Lane Album Release Show

Step into an evening of rich harmonies, thoughtful songwriting, and timeless folk music with Jessica Rhaye, Bill Preeper and Sandy MacKay – together known as Preeper Rhaye MacKay.
The trio takes listeners back to the height of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960’s, while bringing a sound that feels timeless yet entirely their own. Finely blended three-part harmonies, shared lead vocals, and a seamless mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation that echo the spirit of Woody Guthrie, Ian Tyson, and early Bob Dylan.
Acclaimed songwriter and Canadian Folk Music Award nominee Jessica Rhaye, with more than 25 years of touring and nine albums to her name, leads on rhythm guitar, while Bill Preeper’s intricate fingerstyle guitar and mandolin add richness and depth. Sandy MacKay rounds out the trio on upright and electric bass, with touches of banjo that add warmth and colour to their sound.
Their latest album Blackberry Lane (2026), features original songs from each member alongside a heartfelt tribute to the late Ken Tobias and a beautiful interpretation of the traditional folk song Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song). The record reflects the musical bond that has grown within the trio, while continuing to honour their genuine love of harmony and making music together.
